Calling all gardeners (and folks who like to eat!)

April 26, 2011

Do you have a recipe for a vegetable quiche that will make someone drool? Are you great at whipping up smoothies using fruit from your school garden? Have you figured out what to do with all that kale you planted last fall?

Then please consider contributing to the first-ever Oakland School Garden Cookbook, which we’ll be compiling this summer with help from students, teachers and staff in Oakland public schools.

How should you write up your delicious recipe? Here are four easy steps:

  • First, give your recipe a name (“Excellent Oakland High Zucchini Stir-Fry”)
  • Second, list the ingredients and their amounts (“one cup zucchini, sliced” “two carrots, sliced”)
  • Third, tell us how to make your recipe, step by step (“Step one: heat 1 tablespoon oil in wok or pan”)
  • Last but not least, list the tools that a person would need to make your recipe (for example, a vegetable peeler, a colander).

Click here for an example of a recipe that follows the format we like.

Finally, you’ll also want to be sure to include the name(s) of the students or teachers submitting the recipe; the full name of your school; and a one-two sentence description of your school garden, including the size and the type of vegetables and fruits that you are growing.

You can e-mail your recipe to us at oaktownteen@gmail.com. And we’d love to see your photos of the finished product! If your recipe is accepted, we’ll contact you to let you know.

Thanks … and eat healthy!
